Both teams, score in the 1st, but the Grays take the lead in the 3rd as Newberry gives up 2 singles (1B9, 1b9 [small letter indicates off pitcher card]), and two doubles (2B7, 2B7) before he is relieved from the mound due to fatigue points.
Perry pitches three innings before getting knocked out of the game. Heard comes in as relief, but gives up two runs before closing down the side, and the score is Grays 7, Barons 2.
Both teams add a run in the 8th, and although Brown is reaching his limit at the bottom of the ninth (has one fatigue point remaining), he pitches a complete game as the Homestead Grays beat the Birmingham Black Barons 8 - 3, and lead the series 1 - 0.
Highlights:
In the 1st, with the bases loaded, Davis is out at 1st, and Steele thrown out at 2nd (G5-DP), however Zapp scores from 3rd to tie the score.
In the 3rd, Hoskins is thrown out at 1st (G4), Leonard holds at 2nd, and Bankhead scores from 3rd.
In the 4th, Benjaman is thrown out at 2nd (GX6), and Bankhead is safe at 1st.
In the 7th, Leonard hits a deep ball to center field (Unusual Play). Zap (CD: 1) chases the deep fly ball but cannot cover the distance and the ball bounces off the center field wall for a double, and Bankhead scores from 1st to give the Gray a 6 - 2 lead.
Perry leaves the game due to fatigue after giving up a single to Hoskins. Cannaday is thrown out at 1st, and Gibson is thrown out at 2nd for the double play (G6-DP), however Hoskins scores from 3rd to give the Grays a 7 - 2, lead.
In the 8th, Hoskins is thrown out at 1st (GX3) for the second out, Leonard holds on 2nd, however, Benjamin (OBR: A+) scores from third to give the Grays an 8 - 2 lead.
In the bottom of the 8th, Wilson (OBR: B) steals 2nd (Unusual Play), and the Grays 2nd baseman Jackson gets into a shouting match with the umpire and is ejected from the game. Joe Spencer enters the game at 2nd to replace the ejected Jackson.
